Texas is known for it’s BBQ, and Houston is most definitely no slouch, boasting over 350 different BBQ joints. But what type of BBQ are we talking about here? If you’re not up to par on your BBQ IQ, here’s a crash course: Texas BBQ is all about the meat. There’s 4 distinct types of Texas BBQ:

- Central Texas, serving pork and beef. Usually marinated and served without a sauce.

- East Texas, known primarily for pork. Served with a tomato based sauce that’s thick and sweet.

- Cowboy Style, undeniably Texas. Huge cuts of meat coked over and open fire.

- Southern Style, heavily influenced by Mexico. The most distinct dish is barbacoa: bbq cow’s head.

There are many great BBQ joints in Houston. Thelma’s (3755 Southmore Blvd) has recently opened up again after their original location was damaged by fire. A great addition to the community, be sure to get the chopped beef potato and some soul food sides. Goode Co (5109 Kirby) not only has great BBQ, they have an incredible jalapeno cheese bread. Finally, if you’re in Lazy Brook, check out Big Daddy’s BBQ. Great meat, great people, great sauce, what more could you ask for? How about BBQ beans that will make your mouth explode with happiness? Yeah, they got that.

People from all over the world travel to Texas to try out the BBQ. What they don’t tell you is most come back disappointed. Book your trip, write these names down, and come experience what great BBQ is all about.
