Budget Rent a Car was originally founded in the 1950’s. It was founded by an individual named Morris Mirkin. The story itself is actually quite astonishing, because he started what has become a nationally recognized car rental companies with a small initial investment of only $25,00. The company continued to grow after it’s creation, before it was sold in 1986. When Budget Rent A Car was sold in 1986, the company was purchased by Gibbons, Green and van Amerongen Ltd. This investment group then hired several management specialist to run the different regions of Budget Rent A Car. The company first went public in 1987, shortly after it was sold by Morris Mirkin. The company originally offered over three million shares available for public purchase.

Today, after many sales, and partnership splits, Budget Rent A Car is considered to a be a subsidiary company of Avis Budget Group. This become finalized in 2006. So to answer the question in a simple fashion, the shareholders who own the Avis Budget Group are the true owners of Budget Rent A Car. The company has changed hands several times in recent years, and has never gone more than ten years since 1986 without changing hands at least once, and in some cases as many as three times. Today in the United States there are over 800 Budget Rent A Car locations. Internationally there are nearly one thousand locations. Budget has come quite a long ways from Morris Mirkin’s original $25,000 investment.
